Nestled in the heart of Portugal, where golden sunlight glimmers on rolling hills and the air is infused with the spirit of adventure, my journey unfolded like a beautifully crafted tapestry of unforgettable experiences. As the founder and member liaison for the Equestrian Travel Association (ETA), I embarked on a mission to visit and approve exceptional equestrian facilities for our esteemed GOLD membership. My first stop was Dom Cavalo, just outside Leiria, where I was instantly captivated by the breathtaking landscapes and embraced by a vibrant community of remarkable individuals.
Upon my arrival at Dom Cavalo, I was warmly welcomed by the staff who exemplified the highest standards of horse care and customer service, a cornerstone of the ETA’s values. The horses at Dom Cavalo were not just majestic and spirited; they were treated with the utmost respect and care. Their living conditions were immaculate, with spacious stables, lush pastures, and a dedicated team ensuring their well-being. The staff’s commitment to their horses was evident in every aspect, from the quality of their nutrition to the personalized training programs tailored for each horse’s unique needs.
As I toured the stunning facilities, I was uplifted by the warmth of the people and the elegance of the horses surrounding me. Each moment was filled with joy, especially during my first working equitation lesson, where I experienced the thrill of learning new skills under the guidance of knowledgeable instructors. Riding through scenic trails, I felt the rhythm of my horse harmonizing with the sound of waves crashing against the shore—a beautiful symphony of freedom and connection. This experience deepened my understanding of the bond between horse and rider, reminding me of the profound relationship we share with these magnificent creatures and the horizons they help us reach.
After this unforgettable experience at Dom Cavalo, a tranquil train journey took me to the serene Wild View Retreat Center in Faro. Here, the pace of life slowed down, allowing me to delve into meditation, yoga, and self-discovery. Surrounded by an extraordinary group of women who quickly became my sisters in spirit, we shared laughter, stories, and moments of profound reflection. Embracing the beauty of each sunrise, we awakened to a renewed sense of purpose, while the quiet whispers of the sunsets promised more adventures to come. Even though horses were not part of this retreat, the spirit of equestrian life lingered in our discussions, as we drew parallels between our personal journeys and the grace found in the equestrian world.
Continuing my travels, I ventured to Beja, where Herdade da Malhadinha Nova awaited with its elegance and charm. Here, I was treated like royalty, enveloped in the luxurious embrace of a five-star resort and indulged in the culinary delights of a Michelin-starred restaurant. Touring the vineyards on horseback was a dream come true; each step revealed the exquisite beauty of the land and its people. The horses used for the vineyard tours were well-cared-for, reflecting the high standards of horse management that the ETA promotes. Riding through the vibrant vineyards, I marveled at the colors and intoxicating scents of the grapes, feeling an exhilarating sense of freedom as I connected with the landscape in a way that only horseback riding can provide.
The evenings were filled with genuine connection as I shared dinner with the owners, engaging in heartfelt conversations that resonated deeply within me. Each story reflected a passion for life and a dedication to their craft, echoing the values of the ETA and the importance of maintaining the highest standards in equestrian care.
This journey through Portugal was not merely a trip; it became a life-altering odyssey that awakened my soul and illuminated my path. Every lesson, every ride, and every heartfelt conversation was infused with magic, leaving an indelible mark on my heart.
